If you have spent any time around modified European cars, you know the BBS RS even if you have never learned its name. Gold centre, polished lip, a ring of hex bolts around the face. It is the most imitated wheel design ever made, and the reason “BBS” became shorthand for a whole category of wheel.
This guide covers what the RS actually is, how the family breaks down, what we stock today, and — the part most people are really asking about — what to buy if you want that look on a modern car.
Why the RS became the most copied wheel ever made
The RS arrived in the early 1980s as a three-piece modular wheel: a forged or cast centre bolted between an inner and outer barrel section. That construction mattered for two reasons.
The first was fitment. Because the centre and the lip were separate parts, BBS could build an enormous range of widths and offsets from a small number of components. In an era when most manufacturers offered a handful of sizes, the RS could be built to suit almost anything.
The second was repairability. Kerb a one-piece wheel and you have a damaged wheel. Kerb a three-piece and you can replace the lip. That is a large part of why so many original RS sets are still in use decades later, and why a used market still exists for them.
The look followed the engineering. The visible assembly bolts were structural, not decorative — which is exactly why the cast one-piece imitations that copied the appearance never quite convinced anyone who knew what they were looking at.
RS, RS-II and Super RS — how the family breaks down
The naming causes genuine confusion, so plainly:
- RS — the original three-piece. Long out of production. Bought and sold used, usually refurbished, and priced accordingly.
- RS-II — a later evolution of the same idea, sharing much of the hardware and centre-cap ecosystem.
- Super RS — the modern member of the family, and the one still available new. It keeps the multi-piece construction and the lipped profile in current sizing.
The three share accessories, which is a useful tell: the same centre wrench services RC, RS-II and Super RS, and the 80.6mm centre caps are common across them.
What we stock today — BBS Super RS
Rev Auto Club stocks the Super RS in three 19-inch fitments, all 5x112 in Diamond Silver with a machined lip:
| Size | Offset | Bolt pattern |
|---|---|---|
| 19x8.5 | ET43 | 5x112 |
| 19x9 | ET28 | 5x112 |
| 19x10 | ET40 | 5x112 |
All three require an 82mm PFS ring, which we supply. The 5x112 pattern covers Audi, Mercedes-Benz and G-chassis BMW.
We also carry the RC/RS-II/Super RS centre wrench, RS-II valve adapters, and 80.6mm centre caps — the parts that are hardest to find when you already own a set.
If you want the RS look on a modern car
Here is the honest answer most guides avoid: original RS sizing rarely works on a current chassis. Cars have grown, brakes have grown, and offsets that were normal in 1985 will not clear a modern caliper. Buying a vintage set for a new car usually ends in spacers, rubbing, or a wheel that will not clear the hub at all.
Three current wheels give you the RS character with modern fitment:
- BBS RS-GT — the closest thing to a direct descendant. Forged split-spoke with a diamond-cut lip, in 18 to 20 inch across 5x112, 5x120, 5x130 and 5x114.3. If you want the RS look and want it to fit, start here.
- BBS LM — the two-piece cross-spoke with a polished stainless lip. A different face, the same multi-piece philosophy, and by far our deepest range at 364 fitments.
- BBS LM-R — the LM face rebuilt as a modern forged wheel in larger diameters and wider widths, for cars the original LM sizing has outgrown.
Fitment — the part that actually decides it
Whichever route you take, the sequence is the same. Bolt pattern first, because it is binary. Then centre bore. Then diameter and width against your arch and suspension. Then offset, which determines where the wheel sits within all of that. Then brake clearance — the step that catches people out on big-brake cars, where the spoke profile matters as much as the numbers.
