Underdrive Pulleys and Dampers

Underdrive Pulleys & Crankshaft Dampers

Free horsepower hides on the front of the engine. Underdrive pulleys slow accessory drives — alternator, water pump, power steering — to cut parasitic loss, typically worth a handful of wheel horsepower with no tuning required. Performance crankshaft dampers (harmonic balancers) do the opposite job: they protect the crank by absorbing torsional vibration, and they matter more as RPM, boost and compression climb.

Choose by use case. A street car that sees occasional spirited driving gains most from a lightweight crank pulley while keeping OE damping behavior. A track or high-RPM build should prioritize a proper elastomer or fluid damper — OEM rubber dampers age, delaminate and let crank harmonics eat rod bearings, a known failure pattern on high-mileage European V8s. If your factory damper is original at 100k+ miles, replacement is preventive maintenance, not modification.

While the front of the engine is apart, refresh seals from engine gaskets and seals and check the timing hardware in engine mounts, timing chains and hardware. Verify fitment by engine code on each listing — ships nationwide, or install at our Miami shop.
